Knowledge management requires some method of data mining approach in order to drive information to users. A knowledge management strategy requires a close examination of the tools, both conventional and technical, for addressing the required needs of the company along with a survey of corporate goals. One of the challenges confronting the act of choosing a knowledge management system is to make or to buy software that encourages employees to use the system information that matches the context of the general strategy.

One of the goals of the knowledge management system is providing managers with the capability to arrange and find important content and expertise required to address specific business tasks and roles. Some knowledge management systems are capable of examining the relationships between content, people, topics and activity and thereby create a knowledge mapping report or what is commonly known as knowledge management dashboard.
